Stag Beetles
There are about 1,200 stag beetles around the world. They are known for their mandibles, which are like scissors. Large mandibles are found on the males, which they use to fight with other beetles to protect their territory and to fight off other males so they can mate with the females. These mandibles come in different shapes and sizes, depending on the species. The males of some species have small mandibles like the females. The mandibles of the females have a pointed tip to help them tunnel through decayed wood when they lay their eggs. Many stag beetles will live for only a few months, but there are other species that can easily live for 3 years. The stag beetles that live for more than a year hibernate through the colder winter months.
