Semester 1 Objectives

Heat and Temperature
Picture
  • Perceive the difference between cold and warm objects and measure their temperature using a thermometer.
  • Understand that the temperature of an object or environment can change over time.
  • Understand that heat transfers from a higher temperature object to a lower temperature object when the two objects are brought into contact, as well as that the temperatures of the two objects will equalize as time passes.
  • Find appropriate examples of heat transfer by observing objects.
The Solar System
Picture
  • Understand why people explore space.
  • Study the planets that comprise the solar system.
  • Compare the planets in terms of size and distance from the sun.
  • Understand the definitions of stars and constellations.
Plants
Picture
  • Be able to observe the entire structure of a plant and identify a root, stem, leaf, flower and fruit.
  • Understand the structure of the root and its support, absorption and preservation functions.
  • Be aware of the outer appearance of the stem and its inner structures.
  • Understand that water absorbed by the roots runs through the stem to other parts of the plant.
  • Understand transpiration and photosynthesis.
  • Recognize the structure and function of the flower and fruit and the different ways that seeds spread.
  • Use a microscope to observe plant cells.

Semester 2 Objectives

Solutions
Picture
  • Compare the weights of a solid before and after dissolving it .
  • Understand the phenomenon of dissolution through the perspective of particle theory.
  • Learn that the dissolving volumes of solids differ according to the types
    and volumes of solute.
  • Develop new methods to compare the concentrations of solutions.
  • Confirm via experiment that the temperature of water is a major factor
affecting a solute's volume when dissolved.
Weather
Picture
  • Be aware that humidity has a strong influence on our daily lives.
  • Understand that causes of dew and fog and the differences between the two.
  • Understand the processes of cloud formation, raining and snowing.
  • Be aware of the causes of wind and direction changes in coastal winds.
  • Understand the concepts of low and high atmospheric pressure and recognize their influence on weather.
  • Understand seasonal weather changes in the regional characteristics of air.
  • Be aware that weather has an important influence on our daily lives.
Acids and Bases
Picture
  • Observe changes after placing indicators into a variety of solutions and then classify the solutions as acids and bases.
  • Be aware through the color change of indicators that acidity and alkalinity weaken when the two type of mixtures are mixed.
  • Recognize the characteristics of acid and base solutions.
  • Be able to find examples in everyday life in which the characteristics of a solution change when acidic and alkaline solutions are mixed.

Semester 3 Objectives

Speed
Picture
  • Understand an object's movement as positional changes over time.
  • Understand an object's speed qualitatively by observing a moving object.
  • Be able to compare the speed of objects by measuring the time it takes for the objects to move a certain distance.
  • Be able to compare the speed of objects by measuring the distance that the objects move within a given time.
  • Be able to calculate an object's speed by measuring the distance it moves and the time required.
Picture
The Human Body
Picture
  • Learn about the shapes and locations of the human organs.
  • Observe bones and muscles through a model and understand their functions and the relationships between them.
  • Be aware of the types, locations, shapes and functions of the digestive, circulatory,
    respiratory, excretory and sensory systems.
  • Understand how the aforementioned organs are closely related.
  • Appreciate how healthy habits and exercise help human organs function properly.
