Mr. Brown's Beetles
My fascination with beetles began when my brother-in-law caught two Japanese rhinoceros beetles for my son one summer. Not only did I see the educational value in breeding beetles as a science teacher, but I saw it as a personal challenge. Spurred on by a little friendly competition with my brother-in-law, I set out to make a Japanese rhinoceros beetle bigger than any of his. He has been collecting and breeding beetles as pets for over 25 years and was a wealth of information in initially getting me started.
The information on this website on how to care for and breed beetles is based on what I have done both in my science classroom with my students and at home. I have successfully bred rainbow stag beetles and Japanese rhinoceros beetles for many years. I have also successfully bred many Dorcus beetles, Dynastes beetles, Prosopocoilus beetles, and Lamprima beetles. I have had the privilege to breed, raise, and care for a wide range of beetles. However, without a doubt, my favorite beetle that I have cared for is the Dynastes Hercules. These pages are intended to provide useful information for my students who may have an interest in looking after beetles. They may also be useful to other English speakers living in Japan. There is so much information in Japanese on the subject, but information in English is more limited. All the photos on this website are of beetles that I have cared for and the photos were personally taken by myself or my son. The beetles all have different charm points, which makes them interesting to have as pets and to study. They never cease to fascinate and excite students. Please note that I do this as a hobby and I do not sell my beetles. |
